Formula Reference
Basic Hydrostatic Pressure
P = 0.052 x MW x TVD
Where:
P = Hydrostatic pressure (psi)
MW = Mud weight (ppg)
TVD = True Vertical Depth (ft)
0.052 = Conversion constant (psi/ft per ppg)
With SI Units
P = rho x g x h
Where:
P = Pressure (Pa)
rho = Density (kg/m3)
g = 9.81 m/s2 (gravitational acceleration)
h = Height/depth (m)
Pressure Gradient
Gradient (psi/ft) = 0.052 x MW (ppg)
Gradient (psi/ft) = 0.433 x SG
Multi-Fluid Column
P_total = Sum of (0.052 x MW_i x h_i) for each layer
Where h_i = thickness of layer i
Equivalent Mud Weight (EMW)
EMW = P / (0.052 x TVD)
Used to express any pressure as an equivalent mud weight at a given depth
