Measurement Tips

  • Always measure from the same reference point
  • For horizontal tanks, ensure tank is level
  • Account for bottom sludge/water layers
  • Use calibrated tank strapping tables for custody transfer

Formula Reference

Vertical Cylindrical Tank (Full)

Volume = PI x r^2 x h = PI x (D/2)^2 x H Where: D = diameter, H = height

Horizontal Cylindrical Tank (Partial Fill)

Circular Segment Area = r^2 x arccos((r-h)/r) - (r-h) x sqrt(2rh - h^2) Volume = Area x Length Where: r = radius, h = fill height, Length = tank length

Elliptical Head Volume (2:1 ratio)

Full Head Volume = (2/3) x PI x (D/2)^2 x (D/4) = (PI x D^3) / 24 Per head, multiply by 2 for both ends
