API 53 Test Guidelines

Low Pressure Test

Low Pressure Test: 200 - 300 psi Purpose: Detect seal leaks that may not be apparent at high pressure due to seal energization Hold Time: Minimum 5 minutes (surface equipment)

High Pressure Test

High Pressure Test = MINIMUM of: 1. BOP Rated Working Pressure 2. MAASP (Maximum Allowable Annular Surface Pressure) 3. Casing Burst Rating (with safety factor) 4. Wellhead Working Pressure Rating For subsea: Test to full rated working pressure or as specified in well-specific procedures

MAASP Calculation

MAASP = (Fracture Gradient - MW) x 0.052 x TVD_shoe Or: MAASP = (Casing Burst x SF) - Hydrostatic Where: SF = Safety factor (typically 0.8) TVD_shoe = TVD of casing shoe

Test Frequency (API 53)

Initial: After BOP installation, before drilling out Periodic: Every 14 days (or per regulations) After: Disconnection, repairs, or pressure control event Before: Displacing to underbalanced fluid
