ESP Design Considerations
- Free gas at intake reduces pump efficiency
- High temperature reduces motor life
- Operate pump in mid-range of curve
- Allow safety factor for stages

Formula Reference
Total Dynamic Head (TDH)
TDH = Hd + Ht + Hf + Hwh
Where:
Hd = Dynamic fluid level (ft)
Ht = Tubing head (Pwh/0.433/SG) (ft)
Hf = Friction losses in tubing (ft)
Hwh = Wellhead pressure head (ft)
TDH (ft) = Pump Depth - (Pip/(0.433*SG)) + (Pwh/(0.433*SG)) + Friction
Number of Stages
Stages = TDH / Head_per_Stage
Typical head per stage at BEP:
400 Series: 20-35 ft/stage
538 Series: 25-45 ft/stage
675 Series: 30-55 ft/stage
Include 10-15% safety factor
Motor Horsepower
BHP = (Q * TDH * SG) / (3960 * Efficiency)
Where:
Q = Flow rate (BPD)
TDH = Total dynamic head (ft)
SG = Specific gravity
Efficiency = Pump efficiency (typically 0.50-0.65)
Add 10-20% motor sizing factor
Free Gas at Pump Intake
Fg = (GOR * Bo) / ((GOR * Bo) + 5.615)
If Pip < Bubble Point:
Free gas will be present
Consider gas separator or gas handler
Keep free gas < 10-15% for standard pumps
